Auch zu dem Film The Mission schrieb Ennio Morricone die Filmmusik. Gabriels Oboe ist das Hauptthema des 1986 entstandenen Werkes, das Thema gilt als „unvergesslich“. Ein ganz besonderes Arrangement dieser Titelmelodie ist aber eines aus Morricones Konzerten, gesungen von Dulce Pontes: A Rose Among Thorns.

Ennio Morricone wurde für die Filmmusik zu The Mission für den Oscar nominiert, erhielt diesen aber nicht. Die Geschichte von Morricone und den Oscars ist eine seltsame. Er war fünfmal für einen Oscar nominiert und erhielt diesen aber niemals, bis er 2007 den Oscar für sein Lebenswerk erhielt („in recognition to the magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music“). Danach erhielt er erstmals einen Oscar für ein Einzelwerk: The Hateful Eight, 2016. Seine bekanntesten Werke, vor allem jene für Leone-Filme, wurden von der Academy nicht gewürdigt.
